Assessing the feasibility of density estimation methodologies for African forest elephant at large spatial scales

چکیده

Effective wildlife management requires information on population status and distribution. Survey methods that provide estimates of these parameters can vary greatly in effort required, area covered, precision estimates, cost. Trade-offs are because increasing coverage generally field incurs a higher We compare DNA- camera trap based-spatial capture-recapture approaches (DNA-SCR CT-SCR) to the widely-used, dung-based line transect distance sampling (LTDS) method assess their performance when applied three relatively large populations forest elephant Loxodonta cyclotis (>500 individuals), order evaluate feasibility for future use at national regional scales. Monitoring Great Ape and Elephant Abundance at Large Spatial Scales: Measuring Effectiveness of a Conservation Landscape

Protected areas are fundamental to biodiversity conservation, but there is growing recognition of the need to extend beyond protected areas to meet the ecological requirements of species at larger scales. Landscape-scale conservation requires an evaluation of management impact on biodiversity under different land-use strategies; this is challenging and there exist few empirical studies. In a co...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

Predicting above-ground density and distribution of small mammal prey species at large spatial scales

Grassland and shrub-steppe ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities. Loss of native habitats may negatively impact important small mammal prey species. Little information, however, is available on the impact of habitat variability on density of small mammal prey species at broad spatial scales. We examined the relationship between small mammal density and remotely-sens...

Density dependence in marine fish populations revealed at small and large spatial scales.

Experimental manipulation of population density has frequently been used to demonstrate demographic density dependence. However, such studies are usually small scale and typically provide evidence of spatial (within-generation) density dependence. It is often unclear whether small-scale, experimental tests of spatial density dependence will accurately describe temporal (between-generation) dens...
